December 22, 2019 Death Valley, California

70 degrees today, mostly sunny and no wind. Beautiful day.

We hiked up Black Point Canyon. The trail head was a mile from camp and we had good directions with GPS points and it was a lovely hike. John came upon the last old phone pole standing. He tried to make a phone call, but he was using his GPS so it didn't go through. Looking up canyon. Shiprock is on the left.

We passed to old dump for Stovepipe resort. John entering a narrow part of the canyon.

John and I climbing dry waterfall pour overs. A lot of this canyon is breccia rock which is sedimentary rock with lots of colored stones in it. It is smooth and shiny where the water has polished it.

Shiprock from the side and looking back down canyon.

There was a whole section of bright red and yellow rocks. John on another pour over.

Looking back down canyon.  This is another polished pour over.

We climbed around this pour over, we could not get over the big overhanging keystone in it. The clouds were fabulous this afternoon. Some sort of close ups of the breccia and a unusual shaped rock formation.

A rock that looked like bacon, dead shrub on the skyline, a desert holly plant and a wiggly line of bent rocks. We stopped where the canyon boxed out and had lunch. We  hiked 2.7 miles each way and up and down just under 1,000 feet elevation.

Starting back down canyon. The clouds putting on a show.

As we went down canyon the afternoon light got really pretty. Red rocks, blue sky and cool clouds.

Mackerel sky back the way we came. This pour over looked interesting, but we did not climb down it, we went around.

Clouds and sunset.
