November 10-11, 2017 Powhatan to Chickahominy Virginia.

It has been very cold, in the 40's and raining. Today we woke up to blue skies, fog and 40's. A marked improvement.

The bus in the fog this am. Dew on spiderwebs, clover and leaves. Red sycamore leaves and blue sky.

We went on a short hike in the sun with the colors. The James river even looks better with sunshine.

After our hike we went to Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery to taste. It is in the middle of nowhere. It has 470 acres around it and is in this large barn like building. We got there at 4pm and it didn't open till 5pm. They kind of set tasting in the middle of the brewery. The beer was good, but you kind of stand in the doorway and it was cold outside.  Sunset from the brewery.

Another beautiful sunny day with a high of 42 degrees. Brr. We were once again on a Virginia scenic highway- very narrow, no shoulders, tight turns and very scenic. John took a turn a bit fast and BANG- the silverware drawer opened and smashed  to the floor. This picture is after I righted the drawer and started to pick things up.

We are now camped at Chickahominy River front park on the Chickahominy river in James City County, Virginia. Good thing we had a reservation they are having a boat regatta and sculling races today. Cypress trees.

Chickahominy is right near America's Historic Triangle of Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown. The birthplace of America. A statue of Pocahontas the daughter of Chief Powhatan. Her tribe helped the Jamestown settlers survive their first years in America. We went to the historic town site of Jamestown. First we stopped to see the colonial glass blowers. There was a glass blowing factory in Jamestown. The kilns are heated with wood and in England there was a shortage of wood, so they sent glass blowers with their tools to America where there was plenty of wood. These guys were blowing glass just like the early settlers did, except instead of wood for fuel they used natural gas.  One of the blowers working on a piece, the glass gift shop and the foundations of the historic kilns.

On the walk to the historic site we passed the Tercentenary Monument which was built in 1907 the 300th anniversary of the settlers landing in Jamestown May 13th, 1607. The first permanent colony of English people and the birthplace Virginia and the United States of America. This church was also built in 1907 Memorial Church.

This is the actual historic townsite. The fort walls are new, built over the remains of the original fort.  Mostly the rest of the buildings have only the foundation left.  The statue is of Capt John Smith The sun setting behind the fort walls and English flag.

More progression of the sunset. It was lovely.

After our tour of Jamestown we went to the Billsburg Brewery at the Jamestown marina. John with his Flyaway IPA and the remains of my Ghost Wind Stout. I only get a small glass since I am such a cheap drunk. They had this vintage Pleasure Chest- looks like a cooler with a tap on the bottom. The brewery is brand new, only been open a couple weeks. Good beer.
