We drove 200 miles to Knights Key. We drove through the Everglades on the way. It was millions of acres of National Park. Lots of saw grass marsh, tropical hammocks, birds and alligators. After the Everglades there were farms. I think most of the house plants we buy in Colorado are grown here. And they call it the vegetable/fruit basket of the east. Miles of corn and tomatoes. Not something I would have expected in Florida. No where near the traffic we expected. But still a little over 6 hours of driving. The keys were not the strip malls we expected, mostly nice highway thru the islands and lots of turquoise blue water.
the Florida Panther is an endangered species. It is found only in the Everglades. Also the American crocodile. We wondered how the crocodile could get thru the fences.
High way to the keys was even painted tropical colors. Here is the first key, Key Largo. The blue water of the gulf.
