The only sea turtle hospital and rescue in the US.
Their ambulance, the x ray room
operating room and lab equipment
more lab equipment, iguana on the property. They try to steal the turtle food
leatherback turtle, holding tanks. Behind is a big pool for the turtles. The property used to be a hotel.
Green turtle with about propeller injury to its shell on the shoulder. It will heal like our bones heal. another green turtle. It had a intestinal blockage from eating garbage. Jewelry and soup used to be made from green turtles before they passed a law protecting the turtles.
7 month old Logger head turtle. She weighs almost a pound. The full grown ones can get up 2000 lbs. They don’t use their front flippers when they are young, just fold them up on their backs. Another turtle damaged by a boat propeller. When the shell heals with bumps in it like this it traps air under the shell and they can’t dive. They either starve to death or get eaten by predators. There is a weight glued the back of its shell so it can dive sort of. This turtle can’t go back in the wild, it will spend the rest of its life in this fancy turtle nursing home.
The turtle in the front lost a lung in an accident with a boat. It sat sideways in the water, could not right itself or dive. It has a weight on it shell and it will live here forever too.
Iguana again. Model of sea turtle eggs hatching.
photo of sea turtle babies scurrying to the water before they get eaten. John waiting patiently for me while I read every little sign.
