Dec 6.,2011 Chemin-a-haut State Park Louisiana

We arrived here on a nice sunny warm day. Chemin-a-haut (french for high road) is a park with lots of trees  that overlooks a tranquil Bayou Bartholomew and the Big Slough Lake with top notch camping facilities , cabins and a pool. Says  the tourist guide. We took a nice bike ride around the park on Sat. After that it rained really hard for 2 days. It is now cloudy and cold. Abnormally cold for this area. Highs in the 40’s and lows in the 20-30’s. We are holed up, I am working on the early days of our trip on the blog and getting the blog printed into books so we will have a record of our trips.

Welcome to Louisiana. John said the minute we crossed the border his taste buds salivated. Chemin-a haut state park cabins, no water in Bartholomew Bayou, this area is in its third year of drought. Notice the cabins are up on stilts, it floods here

John had decided at his advanced age he needs to wear a helmet on rocking chairs, a  bald Cyprus in the bayou that has its roots above water

Bartholomew Bayou, the water does not even touch the boat ramp

This bug was on the window of the bus, I don’t even know what it is, except big. It flew away when I was taking it’s photo (see, it is as big as the camera)  and I screamed. It looks big enough to eat me.

bald cypress, with it’s ‘knee’s out of water the knees are the root clumps besides the trees. Usually just the tops stick out of the water.
