September 14, 2018 Yellowstone National Park

Low 60's and cloudy. We headed into Yellowstone to see the Norris Geyser basin.

Ho hum Motel in West Yellowstone must be pretty boring, Welcome to Montana, the Union Pacific railroad monument- West Yellowstone was started as a railroad town. We thought the park would slow down after Labor Day, we were wrong, it is still packed with people. John jumping out of the plane at the Junior Smokejumper center.

Buffalo jam on the highway. Every animal causes a huge traffic jam. 12 buffalo have been hit this year so far. A hot spring. Gibbon river valley.

Gibbon Falls from the end of a 1/4 scenic walk. Blood geyser is red not from blood but the high content of iron oxide, it turns the area red.

Norris geyser basin and a blue hot spring pool.

Whirligig geyser's run off is red from iron oxide, the blue green is from thermophilic bacteria living in the hot water run off. A view of Porcelain basin, named because of the porcelain like colors in the basin.

Colorful hot pools.

The colorful run off from Echinus geyser, bubbling mud, fall orange ferns, colorful pools, the pine needles around the pools are coated with sulfur and a dark pool from arsenic deposits.

John watching Vixen geyser going off. I was spouting the whole time we were there. Another small geyser.
Sunset along the Madison river in camp.
