March 5,6,7 2012 Lake Okeechobee, Florida

We headed north. Didn’t want to go thru the Miami, Fort Lauderdale circus, so we cut inland and went to Lake Okeechobee. It is the second largest lake that is entirely in the US. Also the shallowest, only 8 feet average depth.  It is surrounded by ‘muck’. It is very fertile soil that was left when they drained the swamps( upper 80% of the Everglades has been drained and is farm land.)It is  in the middle of agricultural Florida. They grow sugar cane and oranges here.  We camped at the South Bay park. The whole lake flooded in 1926 and 1928  when a hurricanes came thru. The flooding killed thousands of people. They then built a 30 foot muck dike around the lake. It has a bike/hiking trail on top of it. But we can’t see the lake from the campground. This end is pretty marshy. I think the main recreation around here is fishing for bass in the lake.

The mural in the lounge in the historic Clewiston Inn. It is of the everglades and was painted in 1945. The nice lady at the front desk opened the lounge so we could see the mural. A Seminole Indian medicine mans clothing. They are know for their intricate quilting in their clothing. This is in the Clewiston museum.

Royal Palm Ave in Clewiston. It is a two lane street lined with palms. It was part of the down town America plan to make small towns beautiful.  It was awful nice of them to make a whole park for John to stretch in.
