October 3, 2016 Nine Mile Canyon, Utah

The  reason we came to Wellington, Utah is because I wanted to see the Nine Mile Canyon Petroglyph site. I had read alot about it and used some of the petroglyphs in my glass work.

Balanced Rock. Nine Mile Canyon is a long narrow canyon with very fertile fields. From the early native americans to present day people have farmed here.

Lots of deer in the canyon, glyphs of elk, ballon man and buffalo. This area is unique with all the buffalo glyphs.

I liked this guy with the big headdress on. More glyphs and a spider web.

Flowers, another elk and I hope this red animal is not a pictograph, or who ever put the no tresspassing sign over it is jerk. An unusual panel, looks like lots of rain.

The Great Hunt Panel is really why I wanted to come here. The sign says it is very famous and reproduced by many artists, of which I am one. Here is a piece of my glass with it in it. It was cool to see it in person.

October 2, 2016 Wellington, Colorado

 

John washing the bus in Green River. We went to the John Wesley Powell River History Museum, but it was closed to day for cleaning. This is the cement bas relief on the front of the museum of John Wesley Powell in a tiny wooden dory in the Grand Canyon rapids.

Green River is known for their yummy melons and squash. We say melons we had never heard of, like this huge banana squash. We got an Israely and a Canary melon, both really sweet.  Beautiful downtown historic Green River, Utah.

The bus at he Mountain View motel and RV park in Wellington, Utah. When John was putting out the bedroom slide there was a big crack and it quit moving. Of course the mechanism is under the mattress, so the mattress moved to the hall and John took the bed apart. He did get the slide back in, mostly with the hand crank. What a man!  He found two loose bolts, one with stripped threads. We won’t use that slide till we get it fixed. But we can still use the bed.

The saga of the two baskets. First I made this lovely lid with a piece of dichroic glass I made.Then the bottom I made was too tiny. So I made a new smaller lid for the bottom basket. Then I made a bigger bottom for the glass lid and ta do- they both look lovely.

I learned a new stitch and added it to my aspen leaf piece. Downtown historic Price , Ut. It is next to Wellington, we drove through to check it out.

I made some nice multigrain bread while John was fixing the slide. Yum.

October 1, 2016 Green River , Utah

Once we got to Green River I reminded John the last couple times we have been here I wanted to see the  local petroglyph sites and he always said we’ll do it next time. This was next time.

We started by going to Black Dragon Canyon. Layered colors on hills and canyon walls.

Detour double IPA. A bee hive in a canyon wall, petroglyphs at the Black Dragon site. The last one is the ‘Black Dragon’. In the early 1900’s someone thought it was a black dragon and it meant that people say pterodactyls. It was later proved with scientific methods that this was in fact 5 different figures that when exposed to water and weather changed into this shape. So no black dragons in Black Dragon canyon.  Rock formations.

Man walking dog, mosern petroglyphs, this looks like the black dragon, see the head in the lower right?, some theorize that these hash marks are a calender. More hash marks, natural glyph, mud hands and poison ivy.

We were treated to a rainbow on our drive to the Sego Canyon site. The first one was kind of ragged, but it morphed into a really bright double rainbow.

Another Sego canyon panel. All the petroglyphs had bullet holes in them. Boo. We could see the sunset on Castle Valley up by the La Sal mountains across the valley.
