January 22-23, 2014 Owls Head Road, Death Valley

We went off on another backpack adventure in Death Valley. Way south end, off Owls Head Road.

Beautiful day to get out. Love those clouds. Our goal was to follow this trail that is thought to be an old Indian trail that goes between Ibex spring and Owls Hole spring. This is what it looks like where it crosses the road. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA 2014-01-22 014

The trail petered out pretty quickly in the wash. Here is John with his pack. We wandered around looking  for it, found interesting things. Lots of old mine claims. They had the paper work in Prince Albert cans. Most were full of sand, but one had paper work, it was from 1945.

We found two of these things. This area was used for training during  WWII. There were shells near it. Here is my tent. John wanted to sleep under the stars on a tarp, I wanted to sleep in a tent- it was supposed to be windy. So I borrowed this one from Judy. Only 2 lbs. I secured  it with huge rocks in preparation for the big wind. Because of all my preventive work, there was not a breath of wind all night.

Evening light on the wash. This whole area is a bunch of huge alluvial  fans, or in plainer terms, a giant wash.  Judy with her tent at sunset.

Me with my tent and the bullet proof tie downs. John resting on his tarp.

Creosote blooms, burro tracks-we saw tons of them, a painted lady butterfly on John’s Chaco, a 50 caliber shell-probably from WWII near the target thing we found, and the desert is greening up- it is beyond me how a month of absolutely no water and all these plants are coming up, this spring attachment was on what looked like an old car hood.

Judy and John cooking dinner. MMMM, dehydrated food.

Sunset was lovely. John-the best man in the world brought chocolate for us! He is carefully portioning it out by headlamp. We all went to bed soon after dark.  I finished my book around 11pm, John and Judy read and nodded off early. The stars were incredible in the dark desert night sky.

Nice view from my tent in the am. John was up early, since he went to sleep early. He is reading and cooking breakfast.

John brought me tea soon after sunrise. The clouds were spectacular when we took off hiking.

Sue with a huge pack. We hiked back on an old closed road, checking out historical stuff. Mostly military stuff , rusty cans, old car parts and old mines.

Clouds rolled in, almost looked like rain at the end of the day. But no such luck, we are after all in the desert. When we reached the truck we drove down Owl’s head road to check out the spring. We saw lots of burros along the way. They are wild, descendants from the miners burros.

Owls hole spring. It is kind of the color of burro poop. There was a fence around the spring, which I read is a burro trap for when the BLM wants to cull the herd, but the gate was open, so it didn’t trap any today. There are ruins of a mine at the spring. Judy on top of the ore chute.

I found this monument thing near the spring. Not sure if it is a grave or maybe someone with a crush on Jerry M. A couple more burros at the spring.

Sunset in Tecopa across from the hot spring. We stopped for a soak and showers on the way home.

January 20,21 2014 Shoshone, California

We drove back up to Shoshone yesterday and parked by Judy’s house. She has installed a 30 amp RV plug on her house for us to plug into.

I spent most of the day doing 2 weeks worth of laundry in Judy’s washer. I hung it all out to dry, then this morning when I got up the wind was blowing really hard, all the laundry was sticking straight out, with a couple of T shirts on the ground headed to the next county. Sunset last night on the Resting Springs range. As I took it a bunny hopped into those mesquite  in front of me.

John-smiling nicely-, George Ross , Judy and Ila Ross having dinner at the Crowbar. It was good to see them. We are heading out back packing the next two days.

January 19, 2014 Palmer Canyon, Death Valley

How fitting that we should hike Palmer canyon. It is named after T.S Palmer who was a naturalist, author and  ornithologist who studied  in Death Valley in 1891. But it could have been named after us! Judy made a utube video of our hike if you are interested. http://tinyurl.com/PALMERCYN

After hiking a mile or so on a trail around the cliffs we had to cross the cauldron. It really has no official name but in the hiking description we read the author called it the cauldron, in another description they called it the hell hole. It was a lot of up and down in really spectacular scenery. Here are Judy and John starting to drop into the first wash. This is the cauldron from the other side,  it is easier to photograph from there, on our way in we could not see much of it.

At the bottom of the cauldron is an arch, and a very narrow pretty canyon.

Looking up at the cauldron side. Very convoluted brightly colored rock layers in this area. The mouth of Palmer Canyon.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The Palmer sister’s in Palmer Canyon. John heading up it. The beginning was a long section of very steep narrows with the colored rock layers tilted up almost vertical. Very beautiful.

Water worked rocks. Very beautiful canyon.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Judy even higher up.

Looking up the canyon. It widened out higher up and you could see that even the peaks surrounding it have pretty chaotic layers too.

Another bridge. We stopped for lunch and eventually turned around where John took this photo of the Palmer sisters in Palmer Canyon with Palmer peak in the background. We decided to not go up the last mile and 600 feet vertical since in the end we hiked 10 miles, 2000 + vertical and we barely made it back to the car by dark.

The bridge on the way back. There are tiny arches in these rocks at the sky line.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

John helping Judy down the rock fall. It was an about 8 foot drop, with an overhang. We got up ok,  by teetering on a rock and getting good handholds to pull up, but coming down blind was harder, John is so wonderful guiding our feet to the right footholds.  Canyon going down.

Judy coming down. Even the rocks above us were chaotic.

My shadow creatively disguised looking into the cauldron. The canyon at the bottom of the cauldron.

The sky was on fire on our drive back.
