Decided to check out these hot springs, even though we heard that they were funky. They were, but they were interesting. We were the only RV in the RV park and it was cheap and quiet and we liked the hot springs. Of course John says there are hookups for water, sewer and electricity, just not all three at each site. The place was in a state of disrepair. It was really cool in it’s hey day, and very popular we heard. It had a golf course, supper club then. It has a funky old hotel, nice bar, restaurant now. There are a number of reservoirs near by, so it is a popular fishing area. People camp at the campground on the lakes though. The bar here was the most popular spot on the resort.
The first photo is of Sleeping buffalo Rock. It is sacred to the area Indians. It is hard to tell in this enclosure, but it is the shape of a sleeping buffalo and it has horns, face, ribs etc. etched into it. the Indians would camp by it and fast and wait for the buffalo to talk to them. It has had many homes. Its original home was out on the prairie. Then it was moved to a city park for many years. Now it is in a wooden enclosure by the highway with a historical sign by it. The rock behind it is another sacred rock with petroglyphs. It appears that people left cigarette offerings for them. The second photo is of the the outdoor part of the resort. It is obviously not open any more. There was a lot of iron in the water so it has rust in it. The spring was found when someone was drilling for oil in the 1920s. They hit hot water at 3200 feet down.
The indoor pool and hot tub.
the RV park and the wide open prairie all around.
Crested wheat grass, little house on the prairie
the bugger men in the bar, they are constructed out of parts of other animals. There were tons of birds. The birds on the wire are barn swallows.
The next two photos are a little hard to tell but there are swarms of mountain plovers-1000’s. We thought we were in Alfred Hitchcock's birds at first, but they left us alive and we decided it must have been some kind of a hatch of bugs.
We went to Malta to the dinosaur museum. There were lots of dinosaur fossils found in this area. They call it the dinosaur trail. The first photo is a mummified duck billed platypus, a squid fossil you can pet.
a T-rex skeleton. Saco Montana has their big summer celebration over Labor day weekend. The Saco fun Days. A BBQ, auction, pie social at the church and a cow cutting competition, and demolition derby. This is a slave auction- high school seniors for a day of work and downtown Saco packed with people for the celebration. I had to stop John from bidding on the young high school girl slaves. . .
Saco main street
mmm, cattle at large??
We met some Hutterites here. The Hutterites are similar to the Amish. They are pacifists and have been ejected from European countries because they refuse to join the army. They live in a commune like farm, farming and selling their wares to support themselves. They dress live the Amish, women in long dresses, scarves over tied back long hair. Men have long sleeved shirts, suspenders, beards. We bought a peach pie, homemade sausage, and some ‘slicers’-cucumbers. All were very good.
