Golden and Silver falls state park is 24 miles east of Coos Bay. The area has some old growth trees in a temperate rain forest.
First we hiked to Silver Falls. It falls 150 feet, mostly free fall from the rock at the top. Really pretty. A close up of the bottom. There used to be a bridge across the canyon at the bottom of these falls.
John on the Silver falls trail, which used to be a road. Golden falls is up an adjacent canyon. It falls 200 feet.
The old road went up to Silver falls, across a bridge and then up Golden falls canyon to the top of the falls. 4 homesteaders blasted the top of the road from the cliff area in 1901 in the second photo. It was used as an auto road.
Here is an old photo of them widening the road. It is 200 feet straight down from here. They took lumber from a saw mill above the falls down this road during WWII. The road was maintained until 1956 when the last homesteaders moved out. Some twisted roots at the bottom of Silver falls.
Shamrocks, a moss covered tree with mushrooms growing on it, long moss, a moss waterfall, dripping spring on a sheer wall and more long moss.
After our grueling 4 mile hike John found a brewery in Coos Bay for dinner. 7 Devils brewing company. John looking very devilish at the brewery.
