Dec 24-25 2011 N’awlins

Saturday we took the ferry over to the French Quarter to have lunch at Nola’s. Alas it was closed for xmas eve. We walked around, people watched. I was under the weather, probably from the wines the night before so we went back and I snoozed most of the rest of the day. It was kind of rainy, gray and gloomy anyway. John cooked enchiladas.  Christmas day we went to see downtown and the low point. Being xmas, there was hardly any traffic.

Here is a cemetery in the poorer side of town. They bury everyone above ground in these cement or stone crypts. It is too wet to bury them here.  It looked like generations of families used the same crypt. on the bigger ones. Sunset from the Bayou Segnette.

Our Christmas tree and all our presents. Here is the first book made from this blog, I got it for John for Xmas. There are two more on the way, 6 month segments of our adventure.

The low point in Louisiana, New Orleans is below sea level. Surrounded by dikes. Above is Lake Pontchartrain. When Katrina came thru the storm surge hit the lake, then it broke thru the dikes and flooded N’awlins. We locked ourselves out of the car there and almost had to call AAA until I located the key under the car.

This dike failed. Here is a fancier cemetery. Larger, fancier crypts. The AAA book says they cemeteries have room between the crypts for disreputable elements to hide and to only go in the cemetery's in a group. We didn’t see a soul. Well a live one anyway.

Fancy crypts. That not a church in the background, it is a crypt.

The sculpture garden in City Park. We thought it being Christmas day we could walk around in it, but it was closed, as was Story land

We took the ferry back  in the car-usually we went on foot. Here is the ferry arriving. The GPS thought we floated above the river! See the blue arrow, that is us.
