January 18, 2013 St George Island after the storm

It got down to 42 last night. I slept really well for 10 hours. I have been having trouble sleeping because it was so hot, high 60’s with humidity. We woke up to beautiful sunshine and it got into the mid 60’s.  We went for a 4 mile hike from camp. 2 miles in the pine flatwoods and 2 miles back down the beach.

Pines, palmettos and the east slough. John patiently waiting for me.

The beach warning flag is red. High hazard-High surf and/ or strong currents. We didn’t go swimming. The storm left a bunch of interesting things on the beach. I have no idea what this is. It is about a foot long. It could be some kind of ocean thing, or trash that was ocean worked.

The wind scoured the beach of sand, left drifts behind shells. Here is a red coral or sponge thing, it was rubbery, but looked coral like.

Some of the shells were up on narrow pedestals of sand, and the ocean brought in lots of shells.

Wind blown shells.  The waves are still bigger and more. Sunset on them.

Sunset. I took many, many more photos of the sunset, but these are the two best.  Looking west and looking east.

There was a red band of clouds north of the island for along time after the rest of the sunset was over.  Another night in the 40’s. Another good night of sleep ahead.
