We are camped at Big Meadow Campground, mile marker 51 on Skyline Drive. We did a hike down to Dark Hollow Falls. The steep , lush valleys down from the drive are called hollows. It was a hot day and a good day to be in the water.
The bus at Big Meadow campground. It is a more popular one than the last one and has more people. Shenandoah is only about 100 miles from the metro area around DC, lots of families come up for the weekend. They are cute to watch. John posing with the statue of a CCC worker. Two buff boys. Shenandoah was the first project they worked on.
The official Dark Hollow falls. The hollow keeps dropping and it is fall after fall after fall. It is a the most popular hike in the park. It was hot and everyone just found a pool and played.
My feet in a fall, John’s whole body in another.
shadows of water skippers, a family splashing in another pool.
another fall, the trail back up. It was pretty steep. We hiked 800 feet vertical in two miles round trip.
Sunflowers not sure whether to go up or down, violets, a bee on a borage, raspberry blossoms, yellow jewels and these fluttery butterflies liked my boots, this is about the third one today.
Yet more falls
John put his head in the falls, more up
