After driving through NYC I was so glad to be in NJ. Never thought I would be glad to be in NJ. We were also happy to leave NJ.
New Jersey on the Delaware River, good by NJ
Twin Bridges, the Delaware Memorial Bridge. It cost $20 to get out of New Jersey, John asked the lady if it was the ‘Get out of NJ tax’. All of the bridges into New Jersey are are free, you only have to pay toll to leave.
John at the low point of Delaware. The low point is the Atlantic ocean. He is at Fort DuPont State park on the Delaware bay. Got Crabs? Not sure I would want to eat at a restaurant called Crabby Dicks. It is in Delaware City. They built a canal across the isthmus of Delaware/Maryland at Delaware city, hoping to become a big port, but when they finished the railroads became a more popular way to send goods. Delaware city has wide streets and big historic houses-in preparation to become a big city, but never did. Wilmington, Delaware near Delaware City was founded by Eleuthere Irenne du Pont who intended to finance a colony based on utopian ideas, but when they discovered the market for gun powder they changed their minds and Mr. DuPont built a large gunpowder plant and they became the gunpowder producing capital. the du Pont influence was instrumental in shaping Delaware’s largest city into an industrial, financial and shipping hub- looking a lot like NJ.
We proceeded to Maryland, half of the isthmus with Delaware is Maryland. We drove a few more miles to bag the low point of Maryland- also the Atlantic ocean. John is standing on the pier of the town of Northeast, on the Chesapeake bay. In the rain.
The bus at the Lum Pond State park. Not sure why it is called a pond, it looks like a lake to me. I went biking and here is a soybean field with colorful trees.
Sunset at Lum Pond state park. Lum pond while biking the next day.
John biking in Lum Pond state park.
Smooth water on Lum Pond in the am.
