October 9, 2012 Salem, Massachusetts

John wanted to bypass Massachusetts,it is just getting too cold and most of the campgrounds are closing.  I wanted to see some of it. Of course I could not find the AAA guidebook for Mass/RI/CONN in the bus, so we had to go to AAA and get another. We came to Salem so we could see the witch museum. Salem was where the famous witch trials were. During the month of October the city embraces its shadowy past with Haunted Happenings.  Including  costume balls, , children’s costume parade, live music, street fairs, psychic fairs etc.

The Salem Witch Museum. Looks like it is in an old church. We watched a presentation of the 1692 witch trials and then another one on witches - evolving perceptions, stereo types, the practice of witchcraft and witch hunting. Very enlightening.  This statue is on the street in front of the museum, it is not a witch, but Roger Conant, the first settler of Salem in 1626.

On a more sober note the Salem Witch Trials Memorial. It has  benches that bear the names and execution dates of each of the 20 victims. It is right next to the burying ground, where all the rest of the dead were buried.  19 people were hanged and one was crushed to death by a pile of boulders.

the House of Seven Gables which inspired the book of the same name written by Nathaniel Hawthorne. He was born  in Salem. The light house at the  Salem Maritime National Historic site and the harbor in the background.

Also at the Maritime site is a replica of the ship the Friendship, a 342 ton, three -masted tall ship. The original made 15 round the world voyages. An old salt house and the Salem Commons where most of the commerce took place. This lighthouse-the historic Fort Pickering Lighthouse  is at the campground we are at Winter Island Marine Recreational park on Salem Harbor.

The bus at the Winter Island park. Right on the harbor. It is cold, rainy and windy. The boats are a rockin in the harbor.
