Two beautiful sunny days. Sat we went hiking at the Patsy pond trail, 2.5 miles. Then we drove up to the Haywood Landing to find another trail, but it was grown over with poison ivy.
Patsy Pond Trail, Longleaf pines and short oak trees, a purple flower
Patsy pond trail, lily pads and Longleaf pines. Haywood Landing is on the White Oak river. It is the color of dark tea from the peat in the swamps. It filters the water, it is very pure water, just tea colored. It looks black when you can’t see the light through it.
Sunday we kayaked the canoe trail in the Cedar Point Recreation area, where we are camped. It is at the mouth of the White Oak river, where it meets the sea. The water levels rises and falls with the tides. John kayaking under the board walk trail in the salt marsh. Sue paddling the marsh. The water was flat as a piece of glass.
These periwinkle snails survive the high salt levels by staying high on the marsh cord grass, above the high tide line. The cord grass survives the swamp by sweating out the excess salt. Sue in the marsh, paddling in a channel in the grass. Alligators live here. This far north they don’t get very big and they hibernate in the winter.
The front of my boat and the channel. John whizzing by.
The end of this channel. John on the way back, closer to the ocean. We paddled about 2 1/2 miles.
