Today we volunteered at a children's fun and history event at Ash Meadows Wildlife Refuge with my sister Judy and some friends Susie and Mary. We had the Kitty Tubbs booth. Kitty was a woman who lived with her husband in Ash Meadows early in the century. They owned and operated a hotel, store, restaurant, bar and brothel out of a tent for the miners and travelers in the area. Kitty among other things like to make quilts. So we had a treadle sewing machine that I sewed pot holders on and Judy,Mary and Susie helped the kids quilt them. John helped with the set up, take down. Then took a nice hike in the area. It was sunny, 70's and lots of fun.
Susie Sorrels to the left was Stella, who was her grand mother who was Kitty's friend.
Judy and I with the Judy's treadle machine and the quilters in the background.
I did not have any period clothing, so they found a quilted sun dress for me to wear. To the right is one of our quilting participants. Below are suep,Susie, Mary and Judy.and Mary at the machine
Frank was Jack Longstreet, another character who lived in Ash Meadows. He lived in this little cabin by this spring.
