February 21, 2013 Big Bend National Park

Today was predicted to be the coolest day of the week, highs in the 60’s. So we decided to hike down low in the desert. Near Boquillas canyon.

The ranger recommended the Straw house trail. 4 miles round trip she said. This warning sign was at the trail. Temp exceeds 100 degrees F, Min 1 gallon water per person/day, No shade, no water.

John in the infrequent shade. Very stark landscape. Very  hot with the sun reflecting off the white dirt. The intense sun washes out the colors. The yucca were blooming and this tall one is another of the 10 different varieties of yucca here, it is a Thompsons yucca.

In Straw House canyon there was no breeze and even more reflected heat. Sure glad we went on a day that it was only in the 60’s, probably 80 in the canyon.

John took this of me hiking back out of the canyon. Rio Grande village is an oasis in the desert. We drove to the trail head to the hot springs.

In the 1920’s Langfords built a resort on the river and hot spring. This building was the store and post office. It is a 0.4 mile hike to the hot springs. Petroglyphs on the walls. The red pigment is cinnabar, or mercury ore.

A view of the moon rising over the Sierra del Carmon mountains in Mexico. John in the hot spring by the river. There was a two story bathhouse there for the resort, but the river washed it away. What is left is the foundation from the building. It is 105 degrees.

In the spring are Andy in the front, and a very talkative couple from Eureka, Montana who told us in great detail all about their natural path diet to cure their ills. Andy is from Switzerland. I met him in the laundry  in at the Marathon motel. He came over with a bottle of wine in the evening and visited with us, he is traveling the US for 6 months. He is traveling in a 1990 converted van he bought for $5000. He says it drinks a gallon of water and 2 quarts of oil a week. He wants to resell it for $4000 when he goes back to Switzerland. Very interesting young man. He has a job driving a truck which lets him take long leaves of absences because he loves to travel.
