February 22, 2014 Ajo, Arizona

The bus parked at the Ajo Heights RV park. This mural is on the side of a building downtown. The movie the Night of the Lepus was filmed in Ajo. It is a bad  sci-fi about a bunch of mutant killer rabbits that attack people. It has a cult following because of its badness!  I guess the movies main problem was the failed attempt to make rabbits look scary.

Just west of Ajo is Cabeza Prieta wild life refuse. We went on a trip with the historical society to the top of Childs mountain in the refuse for sunset. It is the only peak in the refuge you can drive to the top of and it is in the air force bombing range, so they only take a trip once a month. It is covered with black lava rock and wild flowers. The second photo is looking back onto Ajo below.

Saguaros can only sprout and grow in the shade of other plants. Here is a ‘nurse’ palo verde tree with baby saguaros growing up under it. The group is here at the ramada at the top, waiting for sunset.

Looking off the west side of the mountain is a cliff going down to the plains below. The refuge borders onto a wilderness area that starts at the far mountains in the photo.

Looking up at the group and the radio towers on the top. It was cloudy when we arrived. Most of the people left, they thought there would be no sunset, but we were surprised with a brilliant one.
