September 17, 2017 Badlands, South Dakota

It started out cloudy, cool and windy. Not to inspiring for going outside. But it ended up being sunny, low 70's, puffy white clouds and windy.

We hiked the Door trail when it was rainy and too muddy to get off the boardwalk. Today we hiked the end of the trail past the boardwalk. The whole trail is .75 mile round trip.Very pretty. It is nice to see blue sky, no smoke or clouds.

Then we hiked another trail we did not hike because of the mud. The Notch trail. It says it has it is moderate to strenuous. Says you climb a steep 150 step ladder and then walk along  very narrow ledge with steep drop offs. No recommended for anyone with a fear of heights and is treacherous during or after heavy rains.  Well the ladder was a ladder, not that big of a deal, but people were freaking out on it. The ledge was very wide, and people were freaking out. It was a fun trail.

You can see the ladder across the canyon. John standing on the dangerous cliff.

The end of the trail is the Notch than over looks the other side of the wall. John is looking over, the cliff is an overhang so he did not go to close. The trail below it is the Cedar Cliff trail we did on the rainy day.  A vertical dyke in the rocks, most of the mud dried up, but there was still some sticky, slippery stuff. The Notch trail was 1.5 miles round trip.

The end of the Door trail. It is pretty obvious, it is a cliff. cool cloud, the surface of the rock on the Door trail, and a toadstool. A pointy rock on the Castle trail, asters, grass seed heads and a green tree with blue sky.

Lastly we hiked part of the Castle trail. It is kind of grasslands between the big rocks on the top of the ridge. John having lunch on the Castle trail.

John on the Castle trail. For sunset we drove part way down the scenic drive. Sunset light on the rock formations.

It was a long multi stage sunset. This is the beginning.

It ended up being a kind of half sunset because some big clouds were in front casting shadows. It was lovely.
