February 17, 2020 Tecopa, California

75, sunny and breezy. I hiked with Judy,Judy and Patrick to Tecopa.

Judy D, Judy P, Suep and Patrick getting ready to leave Shoshone. We started out following the Amargosa River. The river runs mostly underground, but it is above ground here.

The landscape is white with salt deposits. Judy coming through the cane.

Judy, Judy and Patrick ahead. We left the river and headed straight cross country to Tecopa. This is called desert pavement. The wind and water have removed the covering dirt and left the stones.

A curve in a dry wash. Tecopa Peak is in the background. Looking west at colorful Sheep Mountain over the mud hills.

Judy P walking on ancient Lake Tecopa. Many, many, many years ago this was a lake, but it has dried up and left the playa. Little stones on the playa. The differing textures are really interesting.

Salt deposits and mud hills. Judy, Judy and Patrick on the salt deposits of Ancient Lake Tecopa.

The light was so bright it washed out the yellow color of the mud hills. The clouds were beautiful.  Judy and Patrick ahead, nearing Tecopa.

Evening light on the U-We-Wash in Tecopa. Sunset on the windmill at Delight's Hot Springs. It is in front of  the BBQ where we had dinner tonight.

Our room at the Tecopa Hot Spring Resort adjoined one of the hot spring pools that John is soaking in. Judy and Judy left for the rest of their B2B hike. They will spend 5 nights camping and walk 80 miles to Badwater in Death Valley. They are walking the Amargosa river from headwaters in Beatty, NV to Badwater in Death Valley where the river disappears into the desert. It started as a fund raiser for the Amargosa conservancy 10 years ago and now they just hike it because they like the hike. Salt deposits on the ground. When it rains the water soaks into the ground with the salt. The water evaporates back out leaving the salt is bizarre shapes on the ground.  A mud stone rock that looks like a bone. A weathered post, an arrow head, more salt deposits and the Rock 'n Chair.
