December 12-15, 2020 Willcox to McNeal , Arizona

61 and sunny. We went back to Chiricahua National Monument and did another cool hike.

We hiked 5 miles round trip to the Natural Bridge. View on the way up. The natural bridge.

The hike climbs through oak and juniper woodlands to a ridge, then drops down into the Apache Pine forest of Picket park. The apache pines can grow as tall as 120 feet and the needles are 10-18 inches long. They are a beautiful tree.

John climbing back up the ridge. He is kind of behind the sotol plant. Cottony seeds on a bush, a fern, and I love the way these agaves and yuccas weave their leaves together when they grow close.

The rock wall across the highway from the trail head. Looking up Bonita Canyon, which is where the road goes to the top.

We stopped at Cochise Lake to watch the cranes again. There were over a thousand birds. You could barely see the water in the lake.

A truck drove by and scared them and they took off in mass. It was amazing to watch.

Flying cranes in the sunlight. Sunday we had a zoom call with John's family. It was nice to see everyone.

On our drive to McNeal today we passed pecan orchards and the border patrol checkpoint. We must not look suspicious because they let us through. We are now camped at the Desert Oasis Campground in McNeal, outside of Bisbee.

Sunset at the campground. Today we went to Bisbee Az, just up the road from the campground and checked out the historic downtown. John walking down one of the streets. It was a large copper mining town in the 1800's. When the mine closed artists moved in. Now it has lots of galleries, restaurants, shops, museums, lodging and real-estate offices. Either because of the season or covid much of it was closed and the streets were practically deserted. We window shopped. The town is in a very  narrow valley so it is on many levels.

John heading to the Old Bisbee Brewing company. They would not give him a beer to go and because of Covid we didn't want to sit inside. Will have to check it out when we come back to see all that we didn't see because of the  pandemic.  One of the city parks in Bisbee.

Welcome to historic Bisbee Est 1880. Bisbee was voted the  best year round climate on earth, a road runner crossing the street and the Bisbee Social club cocktail delivery door. Some of the old houses in Bisbee. The valley is narrow so there are lots of levels of town.

Booze, Beds and Food, the list of what not to bring in  including chainsaws, manchettes, attack dogs and sharp sticks. a crocheted table top and chairs with a sign that says' Why yes I am bored silly, Why do you ask?, and some pintail ducks we saw at the wildlife refuge. A monolith seen in a front yard with a silver Barbie climbing it and a fence made from metal bed headboards.

We drove to the Whitewater Draw Wildlife Area to view more cranes. We also saw a large flock of pintail ducks and thousands of redwing blackbirds.

There were 1,000 plus sandhill cranes. They are lined up on the edges of the lake too.
Sandhill cranes in the lake and snow geese flying above.
