November 30, 2020 Roper Lake State Park, Arizona

60 degrees and sunny. We moved to Roper Lake State Park, about 100 miles south and 3,000 feet lower.

190 miles on very, very windy roads today. The shorter route over the Mogollon Rim is so much more windy it is not recommended for vehicles as long as ours. The desert-cactus!

Cotton fields in Safford, AZ. The bus at Roper Lake State Park in Safford, Az. It is a very nice park. Lots of trees with leaves on them and warm. More crowded, but still nice.

A cabin at Roper Lake State Park. We had to drive down through New Mexico because the road going over the Mogollon Rim was not recommended for vehicles as long as ours. Snakes in the campground, watch where you put your hands and feet, racoons want your food, stow it, and a park after my own heart, it says leave your lights at home, people are here because they enjoy the dark. I really know I am in the desert when I see a phainopepla- the black bird.

Trees with leaves! No longer looks like winter. The beach at Roper Lake State park.

View over Roper Lake at Graham mountain to the west.  Beach.

One of the paths in the park. The tamarisk are in fall colors. A creek running though the park.

Cool clouds.

We are in Safford, AZ- Home of the Salsa Trail. The Christmas cactus painted on the Chamber of Commerce door. We went to the Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area. It is this gorgeous canyon in the middle of the hot stinking desert with water and trees. It is so surprising to see.

The Gila Box is where Bonita Creek Joins the Gila River. When the water his higher you can boat 23 miles of twists and turns of the spectacular Gila River canyon with 500 foot sheer cliff walls and dramatic geological features. Our view at lunch of the Gila River.

Views of the Gila Box.

Fall colors reflected. A historic homesteaders cabin.

Sunset at Roper Lake State Park campground. A home built in a silo, barrel cactus, cholla cactus, gambles quail, yellow flower and cholla fruits.
