October 9, 2015 Olympic National Park, Washington

We woke up to light rain  and 60’s again today. These mossy green forests just look cooler with a mist in them.

We walked the Trail of the Ancients old growth forest today. Carpeted with moss. I especially liked these curvy trees. They were sliding down the hill and adapting. John is kind of in the middle, shows you how big the trees are.

Salmon cascades is a a rapid. When the salmon are going up river to spawn they jump the falls. No salmon to day though. Lake Crescent is 624 feet deep,12 mile long  shimmering jewel carved by a glacier thousands of years ago.  It is smooth as glass on this end.

We had lunch at Lake Crescent  Lodge, an old elegant park service lodge. John having a beverage.

The dining area is floor to ceiling  tiny windows looking out over the lake and surrounding mountains.

The weather at both ends of the lake is different. The west side- nearer to where we are camped was rainy all day, but the east end of the lake was clear. We hiked the Moments in time trail in the Lake Crescent area.

The green, green moss is really pretty. It grows on everything.

This tree started as a seedling on top of a fallen log-nurse log they call them . It sent roots to the ground and the log underneath decayed. Sometimes you see  huge trees lined up in  a colonnade on a nurse log. John is standing in a tree with a burned interior. It is still alive and growing because the bark is still intact. Many of these huge trees are hollow on the inside anyway.
