In the 70’s and sunny!!
Near Cholame, California James Dean died in a car crash in 1955. There is this stainless steel memorial for him around a tree. We drove the bus thought the intersection safely. Down the road in Lost Hills is the Blackwell Corner General Store also known as James Dean’s last stop. He bought gas here. In front are these two huge pictures of him. We are now camped at the Orange Grove RV park in Bakersfield, California. It is really in an orange grove.
70’s and sunny. I hung out here, finished my book and worked on the masterpiece. The oranges are ripe and you can pick all you want. We picked 3 bags full.
We stopped for lunch at Peggy Sue’s 50’s diner in Barstow. It is like stepping back into time. As I walked in the door Elvis asked me if I wanted him to tell me my fortune.
Here I am with Elvis. John had a strawberry malt with his lunch. Behind the diner is the Diner-saur park with trees, waterfalls, fountains, ponds, shade and ducks. Peggy Sue’s is a Harvest Host which means we can park for free over night if we buy something. We were going to, but as you can see behind the Diner-saur park is a huge gravel parking lot, no shade ,hot, dusty and right next to the highway. Since they didn’t have parking in the Diner-saur park we decided to just drive all the way to Shoshone instead.
Imagine my surprise when I walked into the bathroom at Peggy Sue’s,clearly labeled womens and saw this manniquin against the wall. I thought I was in the wrong bathroom. This duck with bad hair was in the Diner-saur park. The worlds tallest thermeter is in Baker, California. 73 degress and sunny. Also in Baker is the Alien Fresh Jerky store. The guy is planning a hotel shaped like a UFO and a shopping mall since Baker is half way between LA and Vegas and gets lots of traffic. He is looking for investors. Right now it is just a convenience store with a bunch of wacky stuff.
Parked out front is the Galaxy Peace Patrol and a UFO. These alien guys are on top of poles in the parking lot- I think they may be lights. The giant space man looking sign is out front-74 degrees here and this alien fortune teller did not talk to me when I walked by.
Merry Christmas from the Alien Fresh Jerky, they had a bad parady of Green Peace on a T-shirt, a bench with a peaceful alien (with a shopper checking his phone) and three bad hombre cowboy aliens over the hot nuts. After Baker is lovely wide open desert. The afternoon light was beautiful.

We arrived in Shoshone at sunset and are now parked next to and plugged into my sisters house here.
