We headed up Castle Creek today. It is the next valley south from Maroon Creek.
Near the end of the road is the ghost town of Ashcroft. A few of the old buildings left in a big green meadow.
Ashcroft was a silver mining town and at one time had 2,000 residents. The old hotel and a private cabin.
Nature reclaiming a cabin in Ashcroft. Across the street is the Toklat lodge. Right now there is an artist in residence weaver from Mexico demonstrating the ancient weaving technique of the Zapotecs. They spin the wool and dye it with vegetable dyes. They had a beautiful display of their wares.
Weavers and weavings. The lodge was once a dog sledding and guest lodge. I like the fish weaving and outside was a totem pole.
Buckwheat, forget-me-nots, yellow flowering bush and dark purple aster. Up the road was the Ashcroft Nordic ski center.
Near the end of the valley we had lunch at the Pine Creek Cookery. We sat on the deck in the sun and enjoyed the view and a yummy lunch.
Tonight we heard that there were 2 bull moose at Maroon Lake and we went up, and yes here they are. They are really BIG animals.
It was raining and the clouds were wrapped around Sievers Mountain. I made this amazing loaf of whole wheat, multigrain artisan bread tonight. John took a piece right out of the middle.
The other morning John went up and caught the full moon setting during the sunrise on the Maroon Bells.
