February 9-12, 2024 Death Valley, California

70 degrees and sunny.

I wondered why Bat Mountain was called that. Well I noticed the side of the mountain had a bat on it! Pyramid mountain in Death Valley has snow on top.

Welcome to Death Valley national park. Badlands near 20 mule team canyon.

Badlands with snow on the Panamint mountains  across Death Valley. Zabriskie point and the Red Cathedral.

Furnace Creek Inn. At the end of the week we will meet my sister here. It is usually the last two days of the B2B hike they do. But most of the end of the hike was rained out. But we still decided to go to the Inn. John and I are staying in our RV at the campground.

Sunset from the campground

New moon. Colorful formations in Death Valley.

All the water from the atmospheric river that flooded Shoshone ended up in Death Valley in Lake Manley. Lake Manley usually is a dry lake bed. The water from hurricane Hillary filled it with water this fall. The precipitation the last couple days made the lake even bigger. It is really beautiful. We boated it today. Reflections  from my kayak of shore.

Relaxing in my kayak in the lowest spot in the western hemisphere looking at the highest peak in the Panamint range, Telescope peak, 11,043 feet,  with snow reflected in the lake. The reflection of the colorful Black Mountains in the lake.

John on Lake Manley.

I paddled to Badwater to see how close to shore I could float. The reflection made me feel like I was flying over the mountains. Usually from Badwater you walk out on the salt to the middle of the valley. With the lake so high, the water goes almost to the boardwalk. Looks like the people are walking on water.

John paddling with the people walking on water. Two young boys walking on water.

The salt precipitating out around the lake.

My boat on the shore. The lake is so high it comes to the highway in places.

Sunset on the lake. The lake all the way to the boardwalk at Badwater. Last week you had to walk quite a ways to get to the the water.

Sunset on Lake Manley.
