We are camped on the Three Capes scenic byway. We are camped at Cape Lookout. Yesterday we went to Cape Mears and today we went to Cape Kiwanda.Lovely area, not over populated and very beautiful.
Sand Lake Recreation area is between us and Cape Kiwanda. It is a 1,076 acres of sand dunes and beach. It is open to OHV’s. It has 3 campgrounds and dispersed camping in the whole area. Dairy cows. There are 20,000 cows in Tillamook county that produce 550 million pounds of milk. That equals 60 million pounds of Tillamook cheese and 5.5 million gallons of Tillamook ice cream. Ice cream on the hoof.
At Pacific City at the Cape Kiwanda is home to the dory fisherman. They have been fishing from dories for the last 100 years. The launch these boats into the waves and fish for salmon. When they are done fishing they just crank it up and race through the waves and beach it on the beach and haul their boats away with their trucks and trailers. We saw three dories come in.
Cape Kiwanda and Haystack rock. We hiked up onto the cape. John took this photo of me behind the fences taking photos. There are STEEP cliffs, the rocks seem to be wet sand stone and sand dunes.
Looking down Cape Kiwanda.
Cape Kiwanda. John hiking up to the top of the dunes on the cape.
Sue in a tree at the top. Looking south is Pacific City. It is mostly beach houses and a few restaurants and galleries. Nice quiet town.
Looking north toward Cape Lookout where we are camped. A fishing kayak coming in with one of the dories. We saw a couple of kayaks , stand up paddlers and surfers in the waves too.
We had lunch at the Pelican Brewery. I had a thai peanut chicken salad and John had their apple pulled pork. The pub was on the beach and looked out at the beach and scenic rocks. A jelly fish, strawberries holding the dunes up in places, fall colored salal leaf, sanderlings. We haven’t seen many sanderlings on this coast. They are really cute, running back and forth with the waves.
The sun came out for the first time in 4 days this afternoon, John immediately exposed his skin to it. Haystack Rock.
Sunset on the beach, Haystack rock and Cape Kiwanda.
