October 8, 2013 Bogachiel Rain Forest, Washington

One of the places I really wanted to go in Olympic National park is the Hoh rain forest.  Unfortunately the park is closed. We settled for the Bogachiel Rain Forest, it is a state park. This area gets up to 16 feet of rain a year plus 30 inches of condensed fog. The rain forest is characterized by hanging moss and huge ferns as well as old growth Sitka Spruce, Western Hemlock and Western Red Cedar. Incredibly wet, lush and green.

The ferns are almost as tall as we are. It is primeval. Red maple trees against blue sky- nice color combo.

Green and lush every way you look. Huge trees.

More green and lush.

Gigantic trees. The trunks are maybe 8- 10 feet in diameter and the roots are 15-20 feet. Hard to imagine. The only trees bigger are redwoods.  Lit up spider.

Babbling brooks and waterfalls everywhere. It is filled with the sound of water.

John looking at one of the impossibly tall trees. The forest floor is shamrocks, ferns and moss. We were the only people on this 3 mile rain forest loop. Our own private rain forest.
