October 9, 2013 Quinault, Washington

Quinault is in the South west portion of Olympic National Park. It is run by the Quinault Indians since it is adjacent to their reservation. It is not closed.

On the way down the highway to get there you drive by the national park beaches. They of course are closed.  You can see the beach from the road, there is never any park people there when it is open. How can you close the beach. Even the trails to the beach had these jersey barriers on them. This is Ruby beach. We poached it.

Beach looking north. There are big trees here, so the driftwood is huge logs. When the tide comes in these roll and are dangerous.  John on the beach.

Lake Quinault is the only lodge open in the park. It is a beautiful historic lodge. The lobby and fireplace.

We had lunch in the dining room overlooking the lake. The back of the lodge.

There is this rain gauge on the back of the fireplace. It has the record rainfall marked- 15 feet and the rainfall for 2012-14 feet. No wonder they call it a rainforest. We took a 5 mile walk in the rainforest after lunch. Ferns, moss and waterfalls.

Crystal waterfall. On Connie’s trail the path goes through this huge log, it is  about 8 feet in diameter.

Later in the trail I had to heft this giant log so we could get by. Merriman falls.

Two kinds of moss on the tree, Angel wing fungus on a branch, purple mushroom, fall colored sword fern and a dried deer fern. There are so many different kinds of ferns and moss here it is unbelievable.
