July 22, 2014 Buena Vista, Colorado

Our next stop is Buena Vista. It is only at 8,000 feet above sea level, we should be able to breath much better.

We stopped on our way through Fairplay at the Prunes Burro monument. We didn’t get any history on Prunes. But there was information about the burro race they have every year. They race from Alma, up Mosquito Pass (over 13,000 feet) to Fairplay- 29 grueling miles. The burros have a 33 lb pack, including a pick, gold pan and shovel. The racers may run , walk or carry  the burro , but not ride.  Prods of any kind are not allowed to increase the speed of the burro, only a 15 foot lead rope. After Fairplay we rode through South Park, a huge green valley surrounded by peaks to Buena Vista.

The view driving down into the Arkansas river valley and Buena Vista with Mount Princeton in the background. All three of those peaks are the mountain. It is one of Colorado’s 14ers. It is one mountain in the Collegiate range. Many of the other peaks are named after colleges, like Yale and Harvard.  We stopped at the chamber of commerce to see our friend Cathy Fraser who works there. We are going to park at her house after our night at the Harvest host spot at the Jumpin’ good  Goat Farm. She came to see the bus and zeroed in on the bottle of wine stowed between the couch cushions.

The gate. John talked me into trying three hoops at once. It was too hard, but made for an amusing photo.

A huge storm was parked just to the east of us, with lightening and a rainbow at the very bottom. Beautiful sunset clouds.
