Yesterday we saw this sign for the Auto Tour, so today we decided to see what it is. It is a tour of the McCallum oil field.  It has stops with information. We saw lots of oil wells.

Interestingly enough they mostly have CO2 gas wells. They clean out the hydrocarbons in this plant and put it in these tanker trucks and sell it as a valuable commodity. It is the gas that produces the fizz in soft drinks and  Beer. Used in fire extinguisher, CoO2 pushes air aside, robbing fire of oxygen needed to burn. It is also utilized to enhance production in oil wells and is used in Food processing, greenhouses and steel making. Who knew, I thought they just made it with a chemical reaction. On scenic stop is the Ice Cream well. It was the first well drilled in 1926 and it had a CO2 blowout. I think is was where the post behind the sign is.

After the auto tour we stopped at the Arapahoe wildlife refuge on the Illinois river. It is very, very green with a pretty meandering river thought it.

At dusk we took the wild life refuge auto tour. We saw some antelope, this one sort of posed for me. One of the many ponds on the refuge, lots of birds.

And more wildlife on the refuge. Lots of new calves this time of year. Sunset on another pond.
