We went sight seeing mostly in town today.
We started at the Movie Museum. This horse is in front of the museum. Tons of movies have been filmed in the area. Some are The Lone Ranger, Planet of the Apes, Gun Smoke, Arabian Nights, My Friend Flicka, etc. These buildings are all part of movie scenery. The adobe buildings are made out of fiberglass, many of the buildings are just the fronts.
I walked in the jail and look who was in jail! He went in there and just waited till I showed up. Clint Eastwood filmed The Outlaw Josie Wales here in some of these fiberglass/adobe buildings.
A U.S. Male! Me wearing the new jewels I made out of the stones I got in Caliente, in front of a lilac bush. Smelled heavenly.
Closer up of the jewels. The stones are varicite-a gem similar to turquoise, mined by a friend of the lady who owned the store. I photographed them on a tourist brochure from the area, so you can see how red the rocks are, for when you see the shots of the dunes. These rocks pieces in the second photo are cut out of local rock here in Kanab at the Nature’s Showcase store next door to the movie museum. They call them Kanab Wonderstone. They had everything from rock frames , lamps, wine racks etc. Cool stuff.
The Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park. The sand is red, the color of the red rocks. The color of the sand you find in all your positions when you camp in Moab, or boat the Grand Canyon. Only we were fool enough to go to the sand dunes when the wind was blowing. But the plus side was ours were the only foot prints and the dunes are open too OHV’s, so all the tire tracks were blown out and they didn’t bother to come to the dunes either.
You can see the tire tracks still between the dunes. These flowering plants grow up in the dunes, now they are just dried flower heads, but look cool.
Pink dunes with pine trees growing in them. These other ones look like dunes, but are wind worked foot prints at a scenic turnout I think.
Or maybe tiny dunes made by the wind. Back in town I told John to stand behind the cutout so I could take his photo.
We stopped at the Moqoi Cave Museum on the way back from the dunes. It is built in a cave in the rocks. The owner gave us the tour, his parents built the place. They had a bar and dance hall in it. Later they turned it into a museum with Moqui (Hopi)artifacts they had found in the area. Above are some of the artifacts, the middle shot is Lex Chamberlain giving the tour. They also have a room with the largest collection of fluorescent rocks in the world, and dinosaur tracks.
A red rock totem pole we saw at an abandoned campground. Here are a few signs I saw in Kanab. . .
