April 9-10, 2013 Beaver Dam, Arizona

We are here because John wants to go to the low point of Utah. You can drive closer from Arizona. Tomorrow we will drive 6 miles up a dirt road. It is a rough road, so we will drive as far as we can. Then walk. At the end of the road it is two miles up Beaver Dam wash hike to the low point.

It snowed just a little higher than we were yesterday in Valley of Fire when it rained on us. Here is free camping outside Overton, NV. BLM, no hook ups, no nothing.

Closer look at the snow. Welcome to Arizona.

Wild life in the joshua tree forest. We followed fresh tracks down the road. John was all excited, he thought he would meet fellow low pointers.  When we got there there were 2 fancy dressed women, they told us the collect egg shaped rocks for their gardens, and they have a contest once a year to see who collected the prettiest rock.  Beaver Dam wash is a half mile wild wash. We discovered we had come down the wrong road and were actually in Nevada  and had to hike down the wash to Utah, then Arizona. 2.5 miles each way.  Here is John at the low point. The Utah, Arizona border.

The low point website said that the border was the barb wire fence, but John’s GPS said it was 40 north of the fence. The west bank of the wash had some cool erosion.

Back through the forest to the road.  Some orange flowers on a bush, two cool rocks that those rock ladies would have liked, colored and with crystals, the joshua tree fruit.

We had lunch in different states. I was in Arizona, and John was in Utah where you can have multiple wives.  Arizona is an hour ahead of Utah, since it does not have daylight savings time. So John kept stepping from state to state gaining and loosing time.  .  . the Dam Bar and Dam Deli, the only place to eat and drink in Beaver Dam.
