This gentleman is spinning the lotto for permits to hike in the Wave in the Vermillion cliffs. One of the most photographed places in the USA. They only let 20 people a day in. It is a very sensitive area. 10 are done on an internet lottery months in advance, 10 are drawn the day of. John and sometimes me went 8 days in a row and did not get drawn. The numbers on our application are for each of the days. There are usually between 80-150 people a day applying. The terrain map is of the Grand Staircase/Escalante national monument and area. The arrow is near where Bryce is, the canyon at the bottom is the Grand Canyon.
Bryce Canyon from the rim. Lovely, but much nicer to see up close. John hiking down and down and around. Lots of vertical in this hike.
There are tunnels, arches, hoodoos, spires, natural bridges, every shape rock imaginable in soft dreamy colors.
John on the Peek a boo loop trail. We hiked the Navaho loop, the Queens Garden loop and the Peek a boo. Seven and half miles. I am standing by one of the Hike the Hoodoos signs. If you hike at least 3 miles you can join the club and get rewards, you need a rubbing of the benchmarks or photos of you with them. We qualified today. Will have to see what rewards we get.
Bryce Canyon. The formations just light up when the sun is behind them, well on them too.
Some weird formations on one of the ridges. John hiking up and up and up.
Looking down what we just came up. John and Sue near the top. the family behind us was so cute, they hiked down and up, the little boys were all telling John about how they piled rocks up on everything. Dad is even carrying a baby. Brave parents.
Thor’s Hammer and evening light on the canyon.
Millions of hoodoos.
