71 degrees and sunny, We went to the AH-SHI-SLE-PAH Wilderness to hike to the Valley of Dreams to see the Alien Throne. We drove on a maze of dirt roads to finally find the spot. No signs and confusing directions.
We parked in an unmarked parking lot. Here is John on the trail. It is a 3.7 mile round trip loop hike, but the scenery is compacted into the middle. John in the Valley of Dreams.
Scenic badland area of rolling, water carved clay hills is what the guide book calls it. Red pebbles from a red layer somewhere among light hoodoos.
Orange rocks from another layer with hoodoos. .
Large round concretion about 18-20 inches across. Contrasting colors and wild rock shapes.
Huge mutant mushroom formations. Flat top hoodoos.
John under giant mushrooms.
Amazing jumble of shapes.
John in the Valley of dreams. Cool erosion patterns on formations. Large, long rock propped up.
The red 'log' is petrified wood. It was all over in there. The black layer is coal. Hoodoos.
Multicolored badlands. This rock is eroding like pages in a book, petrified wood log, this petrified wood log is starting to agatize, erosion and stones.
An arch. John surrounded by alien forms. Fortunately they are slow and he escaped.
John thinks this is called Valley of Dreams because of the nightmarish shapes of the rocks. So many different things to look at it is hard to know where to start.
John and I at the Alien Throne. The guide book says it is known across the globe. A nice gentleman from Oklahoma took our photos. He said he drove 750 miles from Oklahoma just to see the Throne. The world famous Alien Throne.
The nice man also took a photo of us at lunch. He was very eager to get us a photo of us, he took about 20. Hoodoo with a top hat.
The GPS says one of these formations is the Chocolate Penguin King. But could not tell us which one. Just marked that area. Stoney satellite dish.
Orange caprocks on mudstone pillars. The GPS says that this formation between the parking lot and the Valley of Dreams is the Wiseman.
One of the Wiseman.
