August 1-3, 2018 Summit County to Fort Collins., Colorado

Hiking in Summit County, Colorado.

From the parking lot of the condos where I stayed last night. The Buffalo fire was stopped by the clear cut between the condos and the forest. Saving the condos about 2 months ago. Today I hiked with Cathy and Rosie up Mt Sniktau from Loveland Pass, Colorado. The whole hike is above treeline. Cathy, Rosie and I.

A chili pepper shaped snowfield. Rosie and Cathy ahead of me. The trail is really steep, but the photo does not show that.

You can see Arapaho Basin ski area across the valley. Also the road that switch backs up the pass.  Keystone is on the far mountain, but you can't see if through all the smoke from the forest fires. Rosie and Cathy were taking photos of me in front of the scene, then they waved when I pointed the camera.  The top of Mt Sniktau is behind them.  The wind was blowing really hard and it started to rain just past here so we turned around and came back. Also I could not breath at that altitude.  We spent most of the winter at sea level and I have not acclimated to high altitudes yet.

The alpine wild flowers were winding down for the season. We did see these yellow composites, saxifrage and old man of the mountain. Here is a mix of three all together. The view over the ridge.

We went to the High Hops Brewery to visit with Heidi and James. Heidi is my sort of niece. She and James are getting married here next month and we will be gone. Boo.  Heidi with me and John with his IPA at the brewery.

John, James and Heidi in front of the hops garden at High Hops Brewery. Sunset over the same picture.

James and Heidi, the almost newly weds. So nice to see them and meet James. The Joseph Antoine Janis cabin was moved to the Heritage Courtyard by the library in 1939. It plus all the others were open today so I toured them.

Amber waves of grain on the bike path tonight. Still some summer flowers blooming along the path. Sunflowers, prickly poppy, gallaridia, bee balm, gallaridia and Mexican hats and campion.

Sunset tonight. First Friday at the pottery place down the street. They have this sodium kiln. It is gas fired and they heat the pottery up to a hot level and then spray a sodium carbonate solution into the kiln and it burns where it lands so the posts have a burnt look on them, some of the pots fired in it. At another pottery first friday place I got to throw a pot. Never done that before. It was fun.
There was free music in Old Town square tonight. We also went to the Artery and saw the pink band play.
