August 21-22, 2018 Saratoga, Wyoming

We drove to Saratoga, Wyoming today, in the rain. 60-70's, very windy and raining. What happened to summer in August??

We drove through Walden, Co in a lush green valley, into Wyoming, and drove though Riverside (gateway to the Sierra Madres and Encampment. Both tiny little towns with nice old log houses, deer in the streets and rain. There is a big museum in Encampment we may go back and see.  Road scenes from Northern Colorado on top and Wyoming on the bottom, in the rain.

The bus parked at Saratoga Lake. $15 50 amp site and we are practically the only people here. We have been here before when it is warm and sunny. It is fun to kayak on the lake at sunset and has a nice dirt road around it where I rode my bike. It is cold and windy now. A meager sunset through the rain clouds.

Two reasons to come to Saratoga besides that it is the gateway to the very beautiful Snowy Range mountains and a cute little western town. The Hobo hot springs and the Snowy Mountain Brewery. The hot springs are free, have two large hot pools that are wonderful. John at the brewery with  his Indian Rye IPA and some pork belly popcorn which is popped in bacon grease and topped with bacon. the brewery is at the Saratoga Hot Springs Resort which is a very fancy western lodge. It also has hot springs for it's guests only. Some of their hot pools are in tepees.

Took a nice bike ride around the lake this am. It was in the low 70's and sunny. A view of the beach across the lake from the campground.

Sand dunes around the beach and a burly cattle guard.

Flowery gate, bee flower ,golden asters and seagulls at the beach. This afternoon we went to the Grand Encampment museum. Inside the livery stable they had all the vehicles.

It had a nice collection of old buildings from the area with exhibits in each one. We took the guided tour, you can't go inside the buildings without a tour guide. We climbed the fire tower for the view. Yesterday lightening struck the tower so thankfully is not stormy when we went up. This double decker outhouse is for deep snow. In the summer they use the bottom story and in the winter they fold the seats back on the bottom and use the upper story.

I like the way the windows of the saloon reflect the sky as Em our tour guide locks the door. Welcome to Saratoga, Snowy Range Ambassadors. The Snowy range is just to the east of town, it is very pretty mountains. The Whistle pig saloon and Beaver Liquors are in Saratoga. At the museum the story of aprons was one of the exhibits and part of the cow collection at another.

Beautiful historic downtown Saratoga. A field of hay outside of town looking toward the Snowy Range.
The grocery store is decorated with mounted animals.
