October 2, 2019 Lava Beds National Monument, California

Warmed up into the 60's and partly cloudy.

Eagle Lake north of Susanville on the way here. Lava Beds, baskets and adopt-a-bat in the visitors center. A weird looking cut off tree branch and some Pahoehoe--ropy lava.

Lava Beds has over 800 lava tube caves, 23 have been enhanced for visitors access. We went down the stairs into Mush Pot cave. It is the very easy, modified for wimps like me who are claustrophobic and hate dark caves. It had a smooth walkway and was lighted. Looking into the mouth of it at the bottom of the stairs you can see the lights inside. John walking on the lighted walkway in Mush Pot Lava tube cave.

We climbed a cinder cone that looks a bit like this one. 500 feet elevation in  0.7 miles up. A view of a small volcano.

It was kind of cloudy, but this is Mt Shasta many,  many miles to the west of us. Looking down on Tule Lake and some fields.

Another view of the many cinder cones in Lava Beds National Monument. The top of the cinder cone we climbed has a fire tower on top.

Looking down on a half cinder cone and a hole in the ground. Cool clouds on the way back down the cinder cone.

Blooming flowers, cool bright green moss, twisted trees and juniper berries. On the visitors log for the trail we climbed the entry above ours said that the trail was 'So trippy very beautiful'. A twisty piece of wood. The lava rocks here have a lot of iron in them, so they are bright red.

The bus at the Hawk's nest RV park. Very nice, wooded, dark and quiet. Sunset over the bus tonight.
