September 6, 2013 Newhalem, Washington

It rained all night last night, with lightening and thunder. It was noisy it kept me awake.

We took a walk on the trails in Newhalem, where we are camped. The sun came out for most of the day, now it is raining again. The Skajet river was turquoise yesterday, today is it dark green from the sediment from the rains.

This totem pole was placed here in 1935, carved by a native American. When the Thunderbird on the top flies it’s wing beats are the thunder and the lightening comes from the light in his eyes. I think there were a couple of these flying around last night. The pass to the east of here, the one we just came over is closed. It is the one where we did all those beautiful high altitude hiking. The rain caused mudslides. It is the 7th one this summer. The last one closed the road for 10 days and they took out 3000 dump truck loads of mud to open it. This one they are not even going to evaluate when they may have it open until next week when it stops raining.

Me by the muddy river. We both have our packs on under our rain jackets and look like we have huge bums.

The moss in the top left is about 5 inches thick, it feels like walking on a sponge. The trees had many types  of growth on them.
