63 and sunny.
We visited the Maturango museum today. It has exhibits on the history and natural history of the area. I mostly wanted to go because I thought they would have more information on the Cosos Mountains Petroglyphs in the area, which is the most extensive petroglyph field in the western hemisphere , with. 100,000 glyphs. They are on the Naval Air Weapons Station at China Lake just north of town. And no one is admitted to the station unless they work there.
A photograph of some of the Cosos Mountains Petroglyphs. Some metal sculptures of some of the Coso Mountain petroglyphs.
More metal sculptures of some of the Coso Mountain petroglyphs. Next door is the China Lake Museum which is about the Naval Air Weapons Station at China Lake. It is a large military installation that supports research, testing and evaluation for the United States navy. It is 1.1 million acres. It has some amazing facilities and equipment. They have developed a large portion of the US weapons. Very interesting museum.
Slow sign at the RV park, some native American baskets from the Maturango Museum, MK IV weapon that is a more sophisticated version of the Fat Boy that was detonated over Nagasaki in WWII and some air craft displayed at the China Lake Museum. Two different sundials from the two museums. The top one you stand on the month of the year and your shadow fall on the time. The second one is at the China Lake Museum and has a missile in it.
Entrance to the Naval Air Weapons Station at China Lake at Ridgecrest. The view of the eastern Sierra's leaving Ridgecrest.
High of 56 and sunny. The bus at Oak Creek Campground in Fort Independence , California. They redid this park, it used to be a dump and the power only worked in a few sites. They also put in a new bathroom. It is very nice now. These two bugs ran across our site, the big one was going forward and the small one backwards.
View of the eastern Sierra's from our site. They are doing a prescribed burn a little north. The valley is full of smoke. The smoke is settling into the lower part of the valley as evening arrives. They will burn again tomorrow, then be done.
Inyo Mountains to the east from the campsite in late afternoon light.
Sunset tonight.
57 and sunny today. I finished this basket this am. It is made from dyed pine needles, polyester thread, glass, metal and I think red jasper beads. The center is a piece of glass I enameled and fused. It is 10 1/2 x 2 inches. We helped decorate for the Fruit Cake Festival today. The theme is French Revolution--'let them eat fruit cake!'
Decorating at the Fruit cake festival. Don and John hanging the deer heads.
