We camped next in the City of Rocks State Park, just north of Deming, New Mexico.
The traffic exchange into Deming was painted with Mimbres pottery designs. The Mimbres Indians lived in this area. The Deming Performing Arts Theater.
We had lunch at Irma's Mexican restaurant. A mural in town.
City of Rocks are a bunch of huge rocks. The wind and water sculpted the volcanic tuft creating rows of monolithic blocks that gave the park its name. Camping/picnicking sites are tucked away in these Stonehenge-like formations and the park features a cactus garden and hiking/biking trails. There are some sites with hookups, but they were full. These non hook up sites were much cooler in the rocks anyway. Not many people here, very quiet and at night the stars are beautiful.
We are still in the Chihauhaun desert. We walked all afternoon around in the rocks.
Narrow view, the bus in the rocks.
Rattlesnake warning. Just what I need to worry about walking around at night-stepping on a rattlesnake.
Suep in the rocks. The visitors center is built out of native rocks to blend in. The whole place is run with windmills and solar.
Desert flora. Agave, desert ferns under a rock, agave and yucca with last years bloom stalks.
Some heads and faces I saw in the rocks. The right one looks like someone whispering in another’s ear.
John took this nice shot of the evening light, and I took the sunset.
The sunset reflected in the bus and our view of last light.
