The day started out foggy and gray. Seemed like rain was predicted. In the 60’s.
So went to the Marine Life Center to check out sea organisms. John with a whale skull. The tide pool at the Marine center. It has lots of cool things in it, sea cucumbers, anemones, nudi branches, sea urchins, shellfish. We could touch all the things in this one.
In the display aquariums were an abalone, nudibranch, anemones, and this cute little octopus, he was real active crawling all over. One of two whale skeletons suspended form the ceiling and the bottom one is a sea otter.
There was a tank full of juvenile salmon that John was feeding and they were zipping around like piranhas. The sun came out so we strolled around the docks and fishermans wharf. You have to take your fish carcasses away from the marina to dispose of them and a pile of crab traps. The boats in the marina.
We checked out the Ocean Novelties and fresh sea food. On one of the boats was a skeleton with a parrot skeleton on his shoulder and the memorial for fisherman who died at sea and on land.
Stop Oregon’s invaders- you have to rinse off your boat after you take it out. They have oyster farms here, and here is pile of oyster shells outside one. We were inspired to head out and look at real tide pools. We hiked down to this lovely beach.
Rocks on the beach and a waterfall too.
In real life tide pools are not as diverse as the one at the aquarium. Mostly they just have these green anemones, barnacles and snails. We saw a tiny sculpin- the black and white fish in the top corner. This crab was on the beach.
The tide pools and the far rock islands are Simpson’s reef. There are tons of sea lions barking at each other and harbor seals on them.
Sunset was lovely.
