We boated the Siltcoos Canoe Trail. The river starts at Siltcoos Lake and wends it way through dense coastal forest and tall sand ridges of the Oregon Dunes before emptying into a wide estuary rich with wildlife near the rivers confluence with the Pacific ocean. Ferns growing on a tree branch with fall colors. From the put in it is 2.5 miles to the ocean.
John approaching some of the sand dunes. John happy on the river.
Many hazards existed. Logs in the river, a dam that you are supposed to portage, but it was open when we got there. The water is cold and there can also be high winds, swift currents, tidal fluctuations and submerged logs.
Mostly it is a lovely ride down.
One mile from the ocean we enter the estuary. We are only one mile from the ocean. The plovers are not nesting now so we could go ashore. John with the ocean ahead.
My boat beached in the estuary by the ocean. Lots and lots of birds at the confluence. Huge waves too. We had our lunch here.
We had to paddle against the current on the way back. We had a tail wind and the tide was coming in for the lower portion. John paddling by the salt marsh in the estuary and with trees farther up. It was a lovely paddle.
Afterwards we went to historic downtown Florence. They had these painted sea lions all over town for their dancing with the sea lions fund raiser. This one was Green Eyed Sue. Downtown and the marina.
