November 5-6, 2016 North of Florence to Coos Bay, Oregon

It was stormy-pouring rain and foggy so we went north to Cape Perpetua to watch the big waves against the rocks.

On the way we stopped at the Darlingtonia State Natural area. It is a boardwalk through a bog full of these darlingtonia-they are cobra like carnivorous plants. Really cool- about a foot and a half tall.  Then we stopped at the Hecta light house viewpoint. This is one of the most photographed light houses. Probably not photographed much in this thick fog. There were a bunch of sea lions way down below us.

A mushroom, flower with the Sea Lion Caves sign. We stopped to see the Sea lions, but they were out, they are here in the winter. They are even replacing the elevator to get to the cave- but it will be open in time for their return. Our next stop was Cape Perpetua scenic area. It is a great place to watch waves. Of course with all the fog and rain none of the photos came out. There were huge waves and a lot of white foam. It was awesome. Above are a couple shots of Cooks chasm with it’s Spouting horn geyser like thing that goes off every time a big wave hits below. The chasm is full of the this facinating foam. It looks like cream spashing about.

From the bridge above Cooks chasm you cam see the foam in the huge waves. In the second one is the foam and the spouting horn from above. A little bit down  are these other huge chasms with huge waves when the wave hits the back of them. These waves are 30 or 40 feet high. I could watch them all day.

We did the hike around to Devil’s churn, which is more of the same, huge waves and sloshing cream. It was pouring rain.

Another chasm that does not get crashing waves, but big log driftwood has floated in. The fog was very thick above us too.

John got cranky with all the rain and cold, so we went to Yachets Brewery for lunch in Yachets- a cute little coastal town.  Driving into Coos Bay over the bridge.

We are camped at Bastondorff Beach county park, this is the beach. Lovely.

Sea gulls. The waves were HUGE. These are by the jetty. This lady did not stand this close for long.

These guys are  burning this mushroom tonight to draw attention to their plight. They have been removing garbage from the county roads for a year. They got arrested recently for littering because they left the garbage in bags by the road for pick up. It is a long story, google Leaven no Trace. We are going down later to watch it burn. These palm tree looking things are usually attached to rocks in the surf. I am not sure how they stay there very long. Bastendorff beach, the sign on the side of the mushroom and a kelp.
